Not many of my Southern friends seem to get Bonfire Night. It seems that with it being grim up North, we made a much bigger deal out of it. Pork pie and mushy peas. Sparklers for all the kids. Bonfire toffee. Toffee apples. Catherine wheels and fireworks. Saving wood for weeks until the big night. Bonfire toffee is easy to make, but it is brittle and bitter compared to normal toffee. Most people will make this for nostalgia’s sake.
Ingredients
Butter 8 oz
Sugar 8 oz
Black Treacle 8 oz
Method
In a pan, gently boil all of the ingredients. Keep stirring. After 5 – 10 minutes put a small drop of the mixture into a bowl of cold water. If it forms a hard ball then the toffee is ready. Pour into a greased tin. Mark into pieces while still warm with a buttered knife.
